Qalqalah is a small but distinctive Tajweed rule that gives certain letters a noticeable “echoing” or “bouncing” quality, particularly when they appear at the end of a word or before a pause.
Which Letters Are Affected
A specific small set of letters carries this quality. Outside of these letters, Qalqalah doesn’t apply at all — which makes it a relatively contained rule to learn compared to some other Tajweed topics.
What the Sound Actually Is
Rather than stopping abruptly on these letters, a slight echo or bounce is added, giving the ending a fuller, more defined sound instead of an abrupt cutoff.
Strong vs. Light Qalqalah
The intensity of the echo varies depending on where the letter falls — it’s more pronounced when the letter ends a verse or comes before a full stop, and lighter elsewhere.
Common Beginner Mistake
New students often either skip the echo entirely, making the word sound flat, or exaggerate it far beyond what’s natural. Both are easy to correct once a teacher demonstrates the right balance.
How to Practice It
Practice short words ending in these letters in isolation first, then within full verses, listening closely to how a teacher demonstrates the sound at different positions.
